Wheelchair lift
What is the difference between a wheelchair lift and a home elevator?
A wheelchair elevator for home use typically features an open car with panels on either side of the lift platform, although some platforms may be enclosed by surrounding walls or shafts. This makes the installation of wheelchair lifts less intrusive than residential elevator installations, which often require space for a shaft, elevator pit, and/or machine room.
Our wheelchair accessible lifts
All the elevator models are wheelchair-friendly. At a certain point, if the space allowed is not large enough, the inside dimension will shrink to a size that may not be wheelchair accessible.
Finding the right elevator for wheelchair
Identifying your needs and deciding what kind of lift you want are the first steps to finding the right elevator wheelchair lift. Below, we have shortlisted some of the most important points you need to consider.
How big is your wheelchair?
Most manual wheelchairs are 27 – 32 inches wide and 43-48 inches long, but you should always measure. We recommend you to measure the width (including wheels) and length (including footrest).
What kind of wheelchair lift do you want?
Almost all elevators at Cibes Symmetry are wheelchair accessible. Therefore, there are some questions you should ask yourself when making the choice: How many floors does your wheelchair lift need to cover? Are you the only one using the elevator or are there more people in the house who will be using it?
Where do you want the doors?
Doors can be placed on the same side of the shaft, on opposite sides or at a 90° angle. For home elevators, we recommend a door clear opening width of 31.50 inches mm for public lifts, 35.43 inches.
What options do you want?
Power door openers and remote elbow buttons make calling and accessing the elevator much easier. Voice announcement, level indicators or a lap-held remote control are other useful options. Ask your dealer about the possibilities.

Cibes Symmetry wheelchair lifts are used in a variety of situations to increase accessibility. Think of schools, office buildings, and residential homes, but also hospitals. Visit our gallery for more inspiring projects.
ADA requirements
Wheelchair lifts are approved in the ADA Accessibility Guidelines as a means to provide unassisted entry and exit from buildings, service, or recreational facilities. Built in accordance with ASME A18.1., Symmetry wheelchair lifts also meet A17.1 Access requirements.
Easy integrations
Our wheelchair lifts have low structural impact. This makes them easier to integrate with existing buildings than conventional elevators.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much space do you need for an elevator?
How much space you need for an elevator depends on the type of elevator and elevator size you choose.
If you have 11 ft² to spare, you have enough room to fit a lift in your house. Our smallest elevator model has a 24 x 33” platform size (WxD) and a minimum cut-out size of 40 x 40”. It will literally fit into the space of a wardrobe.
On the other side of the spectrum, our largest goods elevator has a platform size of 56 x 98” (WxD) and a cut-out size of 75 x 103”. A large elevator like that requires 54 ft² but is also large enough to transport a pallet truck loaded with pallets or 8-10 people.
How many people can fit into the home elevator?
Residential elevators have an average lift capacity of 1,000 pounds, more than enough for four people. The size of the elevator car, however, usually limits the elevator to the number of people it will hold. A typical home elevator car size is 15 square feet.
What affects the price of an elevator?
If you want to know the price for your specific project, we will always ask you some questions first, such as:- Will the elevator be installed inside or outside?
- Is there enough space on each floor to install the elevator, or do adjustments need to be made?
- How much space do you need inside the elevator? Does the lift need to accommodate a wheelchair?
- How many floors does it need to service?
- What is the height between the floors and the total travel?
- Do you want additional options, such as automatic door openers or customized colors?
What is the difference between a wheelchair lift and a vertical platform lift?
A vertical platform lift is a specific type of wheelchair lift. Vertical platform lifts have a platform which travels straight up and down, as opposed to an incline such as a staircase. The vertical platform lifts from Cibes Symmetry are available for residential or commercial use. Commercial vertical platform lifts are approved in the ADA Accessibility Guidelines as a means to provide unassisted entry and exit from buildings, service or recreational facilities.
What is the weight capacity on wheelchair lifts?
The Symmetry wheelchair lifts have a rated capacity of 750 pounds. The Cibes wheelchair lifts have a rated capacity of 880 pounds.
